On October 2, 2021, protesters will gather in over 540 locations across all 50 states of the United States (US) to join the “Rally for Abortion Justice”. These marches come after a Texas abortion law banning abortions after six weeks of pregnancy came into effect on September 1, 2021.[2] With the passage of this law, more conservative states may likely try to have similar laws passed. Due to the controversial nature of the new abortion law, it is very likely the October 2021 protests will witness a high participation rate. The 2017 Women’s Marches organized in the wake of former President Donald Trump’s inauguration into office were some of the largest in US history.[3] The upcoming Supreme Court case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, regarding a Mississippi law banning abortions after fifteen weeks, is also likely to mobilize a larger number of supporters both in favor and against abortion. Localized traffic and emergency response disruptions are highly probable to occur. The large number of people gathering in major US cities could attract violence from extremist supporters of the new law. These include bomb threats and shootings, which in conjunction with slow emergency services could result in fatalities. Clashes between opposing groups and law-enforcement are very likely to occur. The Counterterrorism Group (CTG) advises to avoid the areas affected. If that is not possible, CTG recommends to remain vigilant and avoid large crowds.
