Expected Path of Hurricane Nicole
Event: On November 9, 2022, Tropical Storm Nicole upgraded to a Hurricane and is expected to make landfall after midnight in Florida. The National Hurricane Center issued tropical storm warnings for Southern, Central, and Northern Florida; Georgia; and South Carolina. Storm surges and high winds are predicted to be destructive and cause beach erosion and flash flooding. Officials ordered mandatory evacuations in coastal areas and asked residents to move inland for safety.
Significance: Hurricane Nicole will likely cause further damage to areas where infrastructure has not been restored after Hurricane Ian, almost certainly prolonging power outages and resource shortages. Coastal structures like highrise apartments and homes will almost certainly be destroyed, leaving people without shelter from hurricane-force winds. Residents in mandatory evacuation areas will likely be unable to access emergency services for medical issues and rescues during the storm and in the immediate aftermath. Prolonged rain will very likely cause flooding, endangering the lives of residents and likely leading to disruption of water utility services. High winds will very likely cause power outages, likely lasting until repairs can be made after the storm passes.
Residents should follow local emergency management recommendations for evacuations and safe movement to shelters.
Preparedness strategies for property protection, such as sandbagging, moving vehicles to higher ground, and boarding up windows, should be implemented.
Emergency services should remain alert and on stand-by to immediately begin rescue operations and repair damaged infrastructure as soon as the storm passes.
Hospitals should activate emergency plans to ensure the continuity of patient care.
Residents should remain in safe places and not return until after the storm until local officials have deemed the area safe for damage inspections and recovery operations.`
